Ballad Conference

From the 20th to the 24th of July 2015 ballads and traditional dancing will be easy to find in Tórshavn, because a big conference will be held in the Nordic House. At the conference researchers from around the world will presents their papers, and Nordic ballads and traditional dancing will be looked at from every conceivable angle.

H.N. Jacobsens bookshop, also known as the old bookshop in Tórshavn, took the initiative to arrange the conference as a way to celebrate their 150th anniversary. The conference will be held in cooperation with the University of the Faroe Islands. 2015 is also a special year for the University, because it will be 50 years since it was founded. 

The conference will be organized in six main topics. They are 1: The Faroese balladry, especially the heroic ballad genre. 2. The Faroese ballad dance. 3. The ballad stories. Sources and transformation. 4. Faroese heroic ballads and the Scandinavian ballad genre. 5. International aspects on the Faroese and Scandinavian ballads and 6. The role of the Faroese balladry in a broader cultural context.

Key note speakers are: dr. Andrea S. Opielka, professor Ann-Mari Häggman, professor Eyðun Andreassen, professor Louis-Georges Tin, professor emeritus Olav Solberg, professor Peter Andersen and mag. art. Velle Espeland. The conference is sponsored by the Nordic Culture Fund. 

It is the organizers hope, that the conference will attract many researchers as a good opportunity to present papers. Proposals for papers should be lined up in an abstract of between 300 and 500 words. The abstracts will be peer-reviewed. The dead-line for submitting abstracts is the 1st of February 2015.
