Digital Archives

In 2007 the Department of Faroese Language and Literature accelerated the digitization of its archives. The effort was launched following an initial analysis, which served as a basis for the process.

Digitization has two main objectives. On the one hand, it is an effort to preserve archive material, which will otherwise degrade over time, and, on the other, to make this material accessible to researchers as well as the public.

Different methods are used to digitize each of the Department’s collections.

Tape Archive
The tape archive inventory has been transferred from paper to computer and digitization of the recordings is currently underway.

Place Name Corpus
Place names are currently being digitally recorded. Two major corpora are available in database format: the Faroese Parliament’s Faroese Place Name Corpus and that of Institut for Navneforskning (Danish Institute of Place Name Research).

Citation Slips
Citation slips have been scanned and and are currently being recorded in custom designed software.

Manuscript Collection
Digitization of the manuscript collection is in the pipeline.
